Angels for Change Expands project PROTECT to Combat Drug Shortages
Tampa, Florida, October 24, 2024 — Angels for Change is proud to announce the continued expansion of award winning project PROTECT, a pioneering initiative to mitigate drug shortages by building an onshore resilient and redundant supply of vulnerable essential medicines. Through strategic partnerships with 503B Outsourcing Facilities and funding from non-profit grants, project PROTECT ensures the continuous availability of critical medications.
Launched in 2022, project PROTECT addresses pharmaceutical supply chain challenges by securing manufacturing capabilities and mitigating shortages of up to 100 essential medicines. The program is funded through a public-private partnership, with grassroots charitable activities supporting grants that reduce barriers for manufacturers. These grants enhance production capacity and flexibility, strengthening the medication supply chain's resilience and stability. Most importantly, they protect patients and healthcare providers from the harmful effects of drug shortages, ensuring that life-saving treatments are available when needed.
In its inaugural year, project PROTECT achieved significant success by targeting two critical medicines and increasing production during shortages. This resulted in 750,000 life-saving treatments being accessed for patients, primarily children in need. Building on this success, the initiative expanded in 2023 to include seven additional essential medicines, bringing the total number of protected drugs to nine.
With continued fundraising success and a proven track record, project PROTECT is poised for further expansion in the coming year. Plans to add ten (10) more essential medicines to its protective network will ensure greater security for the American people against future drug shortages.
